On Oct. 13, the Sophomore Class hosted the first annual kickball game. This new tradition acts in place of powder bowl because it was a danger for athletes to play. Powder bowl is projected to be April 26.

In preparation for the kickball game, the Sophomore Class created strict rules to ensure that no one got hurt and pushed for people to sign up. Each game was a total of five innings or 30 minutes with three outs per team per inning.

“We were just throwing out some ideas because there were problems with athletes [playing in powder bowl],” sophomore Ryan Nawrot said. “At first we were worrying because no one was signing up, [but] towards the end we really pushed for people to sign up. We had a lot of late additions.”

The first game was the sophomores versus the juniors. The game started promptly at 6p.m. with all the players in their class kickball t-shirts. Each team showed their spirit by cheering their teammates on. The first game ended with the juniors winning, 9-1, and they advanced to the final round.

The second game was the seniors versus the freshman. After the seniors scored seven runs, the officials decided that there should be a mercy rule for each inning. The seniors won, 17-3, and advanced to the final round against the juniors.

The final game was intense. Mitchell Capps scored the second run for the seniors keeping them in the lead, 2-0, but in the fourth inning the juniors scored four runs. It went into triple overtime with two new referees. For the extra innings, the teams were only allowed two outs to make the game end as quickly as possible. Dean Derrick Fontaine and Principal Dusty Johns faced with difficult calls and were often yelled at. After the third extra inning ended in a tie, sophomore class sponsor Lisa Maccarone decided that the tiebreaker would be a rock-paper-scissor shootout. Each team had to pick a captain to represent them in the game. The seniors picked Fontaine and the juniors picked Johns. The two teams were tied at the start of the first round, but the juniors prevailed, 6-6. After they were declared the winners they did a victory lap around the temporary kickball field.

“It’s just really fun to win the first kickball game. The juniors beat the seniors which was great because we came in the underdogs and won. It was so much fun,” junior Brandon McCoy said.
