On March 1, the boys lacrosse team (3-2) played the Dr. Phillips Panthers (4-2) at home in a hard-fought game.
At the start of the game, senior Luke Magley scored two goals, putting the boys in the lead, 2-0. After senior Tyler Davidson blocked continuous shots, Dr. Phillips scored, gaining on the team, 2-1.
Magley and senior Palmer Collins passed the ball up the field and cleared Dr. Phillips’ goalie, 3-1. In the play after, the boys followed with another goal, 4-1. With seconds left in the first quarter, Dr. Phillips made a comeback with a goal, ending the quarter, 4-2.
Into the second quarter, Dr. Phillips scored at the start of the clock, 4-3. For minutes after, Boone defended the goal, but Dr. Phillips maneuvered around and scored, 4-4. Determined to hold the tied score, Davidson hit Dr. Phillips’ shot ball out of the field towards the concession stand, ending the first half, 4-4.
Senior Griffin Broecker kicked off the second half, driving the ball into Dr. Phillips’ territory. However, Dr. Phillips stole the ball and ran upfield, breaking the tie, 4-5. Dr. Phillips gained a second wind, scoring throughout the third quarter and ending it 4-10.
Entering the fourth quarter, Dr. Phillips made two goals, increasing their lead to 4-12. The referees called poor sportsmanship on Dr. Phillips’ bench with a yellow flag against the team. Seizing the opportunity, sophomore Jack Reddeck scored, making it a 5-12 game. Seconds after, sophomore Colin Kelly followed with a goal, 6-12.
Dr. Phillips regained the ball, rushing to clear Boone’s defense. The referees called a one minute penalty against the Braves’ foul on defense. With the team taken aback, Dr. Phillips scored twice, 6-14.
Continuing to fight until the end, the boys defense kept the clock running out for minutes. Still, Dr. Phillips made a shot, 6-15. With 15 seconds left on the clock, sophomore Davis Pittenger returned the ball to Dr. Phillips’ goal, 7-15.
At the end of the second half, Dr. Phillips defeated Boone, 7-15. The boys (3-3) play East River (2-5) at East River, Wednesday, March 2, at 7 p.m.
