On Tuesday, March 15, the boy’s (11-4) and girl’s (9-5) tennis teams took on district rival, the Winter Park Wildcats, for their final match of the regular season on the Reservation.

In the boy’s singles sets, line one senior Shaun Mealey stumped his opponent in a close set 8-6, ringing in the first win for the boys. Following S. Mealey, junior Parker Mealey, line two, suffered a defeat 6-8. Line three junior Nicholas Alfert won in an intense set 8-6 and line four junior Matthew Workman fell short 2-8. To finish the boys’ individual sets, senior Hueston Duff, line five, lost 3-8.

To start the girl’s match, senior Ashlyn Gage, line one, fought neck and neck with her opponent but finished with a loss in a tie breaker 8-9. Line two sophomore Gracyn Lindborg finessed the first win for the girls 8-4. Following Lindborg, sophomore Grace McCarey, line three, and freshman Kiara Rodriguez, line four, lost 2-8 and 1-8, respectively. Concluding the girl’s individual sets, line five junior Amy Birmingham faced a tough loss, 0-8.

For the doubles match ups, the boy’s line one team, Shaun and Parker Mealey stole a win 8-6, putting the pressure on the line two team, Alfert and Workman, with the deciding set of the match. The team played hard but ended with a 6-8 loss. The girl’s line one team, Gage and Lindborg, slayed their set 8-5, while the line two team, Mccarey and Rodriguez lost 3-8.

The boy’s and girl’s teams finished their matches with losses of 3-4 and 2-5, respectively.

Both tennis teams finished their regular season with winning records and continue play at the district finals match Monday, March 29 at 9 a.m. on the Winter Park High School tennis courts.
