Hungerford Elementary is a Title 1 school, located in Eatonville, Florida. Hungerford has approximately 300 students and 40 staff members. There are a variety of wonderful programs at Hungerford. The school is in the candidacy phase of implementing the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. The program prepares students to become active, caring, lifelong learners who demonstrate respect for themselves and others while having the capacity to participate in the world around them. The Primary Years Programme curriculum is taught in over 109 countries around the world, and the PYP framework is uniquely adaptable to state and national standards. It is guided by six transdisciplinary themes of global significance. Students deepen their learning by developing their conceptual understanding as well as strengthening their knowledge and skills across and beyond subject areas.
Hungerford will also have a STEM program with an aviation focus. The STEM component is an opportunity for students to enhance the standard PYP curriculum. These STEM opportunities will provide a foundation for students who are interested in enhancing their knowledge and skills in science, technology, engineering and math. The critical thinking skills cultivated in this program will help prepare students for higher education and leading roles in 21st Century careers. The program will provide opportunities for hands-on experiments and activities, focused on real-world applications.
Principal Letecia Harris focuses on achieving academic success for all students. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from the University of Central Florida which led her to become an elementary school teacher. After four years of teaching, she decided she wanted to become an administrator because she wanted to have a positive impact on students and teachers. She accomplished this by obtaining a Master’s of Science degree in Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University. She has been an administrator for 20 years. Her vision for Hungerford Elementary is to be the top producer of successful students in the nation. Her greatest accomplishment and most rewarding job is being the mother of three wonderful boys.
