Flag football (6-3) took on East River (4-7) on April 25 at East River High School. The game concluded with a loss of 0-13.

The game started slow, with a punt from junior Hannah Richards before the first quarter ended. The score remained 0-0.

East River started the second quarter with a timeout. After a second punt from Richards, the referee called a false start on East River. Coming off the punt, senior Haley Hadd made an interception.

As the second quarter came to a close, Boone called a timeout. East River scored a touchdown after returning to the field. Then Boone called another timeout, trying to establish a successful play before the first half ended.

East River requested a timeout with 10 seconds left on the clock, but neither team scored before the first half finalized.

Boone coaches gathered a meeting at halftime. The team discussed plays and staying positive through the challenging game.

Richards punted the ball again at the start of the third quarter. Hadd caught the punt, completing the play. Junior Jayleen Caban made two significant sacks in a row, and junior Thayzmar Alicea-Ortiz sacked the quarterback.

Also in the third quarter, junior Alana Crawford caught a pass after the ball bounced off freshman Lainey Taczak’s hands. Minutes after Crawford’s catch, the third quarter ended, 0-6.

East River made two interceptions and paused for two timeouts in the fourth quarter. After their second interception the team scored a touchdown and extra point, bringing the score to 0-13.

A hit to the eye while completing a pass knocked junior Cassady Quintana out of the game at the end of the fourth quarter. Taczak completed Richard’s pass across the field and then the team called a timeout with 1 minute 25 seconds left in the fourth quarter. The girls ultimately couldn’t come back before the clock ran out, leaving the score at 0-13.

The girls travel to Dr. Phillips High School at 6 p.m. on May 1 for the district game against Timber Creek High School (9-2).
